Short Bio

She received her PhD in Computer Science (Bioinformatics) from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) in 2012, under the supervision of Dr. Alfonso Valencia (Bio - CNIO) and Dr. Araceli Sanchis (CS - UC3M). She was a assistant professor of the Computer Science Department at UC3M, from March 2006 to August 2013. From February to June 2013, she was a visiting postdoctoral researcher of the Computational Biology and Applied Algorithmics department at Max-Planck Institute for Informatics (MPII). Since September 2013, she has been a postdoctoral fellow in Biological Informatics group at Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics UPM-INIA.

Her thesis won the 2012 National Best Thesis Award, in Experimental and Technological Sciences area, from the Royal Spanish Doctoral Academy. In addition, she won awards from UC3M (Special Thesis Award 2011-2012), and from the Madrid Regional Government (Excellence in Academic Scholarship, 2004-2005), among others.

Her expertise is mainly in Machine Learning applied to bioinformatics. Her research interests include knowledge relational representation, Machine Learning, functional annotation, workflows and protein networks. She is currently studying how to data-mine the information around existing bioinformatics workflows in order to semantically annotate these "legacy" artefacts, and identifying subgraphs in these workflows through the semantic annotations in order to retrieve common and re-usable fragments of scientific knowledge.
